Chapter 7: The Driveway
Months later, an ambulance came down the street again.
Karen heard the siren before she saw the flashing lights.
Her first instinct was the old one.
She looked toward her driveway.
The ambulance turned sharply and stopped across the lower section of it.
For one brief second, Karen felt the familiar irritation rise.
Then she saw the EMTs moving.
She stepped backward.
She opened the driveway gate.
“Go ahead,” she called.
The paramedics hurried past.
Karen stood aside and watched them enter the house across the street.
Nobody asked her to move.
Nobody needed to.
She had already moved.
Ruth stood beside her on the sidewalk.
“Getting easier?” Ruth asked.
Karen nodded.
“A little.”
They waited together.
Twenty minutes later, the paramedics came back out.
The patient had been stabilized.
The ambulance doors closed.
The siren sounded again.
As it pulled away, Karen looked at the strip of concrete where she had once stood demanding that an emergency stop for her convenience.
Nothing about the driveway had changed.
It was still hers.
Her house was still hers.
Her boundaries still mattered.
But they no longer had to matter more than everything happening beyond them.
That evening, Karen sat on her porch.
Across the street, Ruth watered her tree.
Linda waved from her car.
A delivery driver briefly stopped in front of Karen’s driveway.
Karen looked at him.
Then she laughed.
She walked over and asked him to move the truck—but this time, she waited until he finished helping an elderly customer carry a heavy package.
The neighborhood kept moving.
So did Karen.
And when the next ambulance came, there was a clear path waiting for it—not because someone had threatened Karen, fined her, or forced her to change.
Because she had finally learned the difference between owning a place and knowing what that place was for.
A home was supposed to give people somewhere safe to return to.
Sometimes, that meant opening the way for someone else to get there first.
