Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Door
Ruth came home twelve days later.
Karen watched from her kitchen window as Emily helped her out of the car.
Ruth moved slowly.
She looked smaller than Karen remembered.
That afternoon, Karen crossed the street carrying a casserole.
She almost left it on the porch.
Instead, she knocked.
Emily opened the door.
“She’s expecting you.”
Ruth was sitting in her favorite chair.
A blanket covered her legs.
Karen placed the casserole on the kitchen counter.
“I came to apologize.”
Ruth looked at her for a long moment.
“I know.”
Karen frowned.
“How?”
“Emily told me.”
Karen sat down.
“I was wrong.”
Ruth nodded.
“Yes.”
There was no dramatic speech.
No condemnation.
Just agreement.
Karen looked at her hands.
“I’ve spent years thinking that if I kept everything in order, nothing else could fall apart.”
Ruth studied her.
“Did it work?”
Karen almost smiled.
“No.”
Ruth reached toward the side table and picked up a framed photograph.
It showed Ruth and her husband, Frank, standing beside the same tree Karen had seen earlier.
“We planted that tree the year we moved here,” Ruth said.
Karen looked at it.
“I thought keeping a house perfect meant we were safe.”
She paused.
“It doesn’t.”
Karen looked toward the window.
“I lost Daniel four years ago.”
Ruth nodded slowly.
“I know.”
Karen was surprised.
“From who?”
“Daniel told Frank everything.”
For the first time, Karen laughed.
A real laugh.
The two women sat quietly.
The argument over the driveway had lasted only minutes.
But its consequences had forced Karen to confront something much older.
She had been guarding her driveway because it was easier than admitting how afraid she was of losing control again.
Before Karen left, Ruth gave her one request.
“Next time an ambulance comes, don’t worry about the driveway.”
Karen smiled.
“I won’t.”
Ruth pointed toward the street.
“And if you see someone else worrying about it, tell them the same thing.”
Karen promised.
She thought the story was over.
It wasn’t.
Three weeks later, a neighborhood meeting was called after several residents complained about emergency vehicles being delayed by parked cars.
The association wanted volunteers to help create a new emergency-access plan.
Karen’s name was on the volunteer list.
She had not put it there.
