Chapter 2: The Video
The ambulance left within minutes.
Karen remained in the driveway long after the sound of the siren faded down the street.
She told herself she was angry because Linda had embarrassed her.
She told herself the EMT had treated her like she was unreasonable.
Most of all, she told herself that none of them understood what had happened before the ambulance arrived.
Karen had been trying to leave for an appointment.
Her car was sitting in the garage, but she had planned to back out through the driveway and meet her sister across town. When she saw the ambulance blocking the way, she reacted before she had time to think.
That was how Karen explained it to herself.
But explanations sounded different when other people had seen what happened.
By evening, the neighborhood group chat was unusually quiet.
No one directly mentioned Karen.
That made it worse.
Then her phone buzzed.
It was a message from Linda.
Attached was a short video from Linda’s doorbell camera.
Karen almost deleted it.
Instead, she watched.
The footage showed her stepping into the driveway. It showed Marcus speaking calmly. It showed the second EMT pushing the stretcher toward Ruth’s house.
And it showed Karen moving directly into the path of the stretcher.
Karen watched herself point toward the ambulance.
She watched herself refuse to move.
Then came the sentence.
“Then THEY can wait—I was here first!”
Karen stopped the video.
She watched it again.
This time, she noticed something she hadn’t seen during the confrontation.
Ruth’s front door had been open.
The stretcher had gone inside.
There had been a reason the EMTs were moving so quickly.
Karen sat down at her kitchen table.
For years, she had considered herself someone who protected her property. Her husband, Daniel, had always teased her about it. He used to say Karen could spot a tire touching her grass from half a block away.
Daniel had died four years earlier.
Since then, Karen had become more rigid about everything.
Her driveway had to remain clear.
Her lawn had to remain neat.
Packages had to be placed beside the garage.
People needed to respect boundaries.
Those rules had given her something solid to hold on to after losing the person who had shared the house with her.
But watching the video, Karen saw something uncomfortable.
Her driveway had not actually been damaged.
Her appointment had not been an emergency.
Nothing she owned had been threatened.
Someone else’s emergency had simply interrupted her afternoon.
Her phone buzzed again.
This time, it was from the neighborhood association.
A complaint had been filed concerning an altercation involving emergency personnel.
Karen stared at the message.
Someone had taken the video seriously.
And now she had to decide whether to defend herself—or find out what had actually happened inside Ruth’s house.
