Chapter 4: The Complaint
Karen arrived at the association office expecting a lecture.
Instead, she found a small conference room with three board members, Linda, and Marcus Reed.
Marcus wasn’t there as an enemy.
He was there because the ambulance service had documented the incident.
Karen sat across from him.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus placed a printed incident report on the table.
“We don’t normally pursue neighborhood complaints,” he said. “But this involved interference with emergency access.”
Karen looked down.
The words were painfully formal.
She wanted to argue.
She wanted to explain that she hadn’t intended to hurt anyone.
But she knew intention wasn’t the only issue.
“I was wrong,” she said.
The room went quiet.
Karen continued.
“I was angry about my driveway. I thought I was protecting my property.”
Marcus nodded.
“I understand wanting your property respected.”
Karen looked at him.
“But?”
“But there are moments when property has to come second.”
There was no accusation in his voice.
That made it harder to resist.
The board decided Karen would not face a fine because there had been no physical obstruction after the EMT ordered her to move. Instead, they required her to attend a community emergency-access meeting and sign a written acknowledgment of the rules.
Karen agreed.
But when she returned home, she found another problem.
Her driveway was blocked.
A moving truck had stopped beside the curb while a young couple unloaded furniture from a nearby house.
Karen stood at her window.
For a moment, the old anger rose.
Then she saw the young woman struggling with a box.
Karen opened the front door.
“Do you need help?”
The woman looked surprised.
“Yes, actually.”
Karen walked over.
She helped carry the box inside.
It was the smallest thing.
But it mattered.
Later that evening, Ruth’s niece called.
Ruth had survived the episode.
She was recovering.
Karen closed her eyes.
Relief came first.
Then something else.
Emily told her Ruth wanted to speak to her when she returned home.
Karen almost laughed nervously.
“Why?”
“She said she wants to meet the woman who thought her ambulance was parked illegally.”
Karen winced.
“I deserve that.”
Emily laughed softly.
“No. Ruth doesn’t sound angry.”
That frightened Karen more than anger would have.
Because Karen knew she would have to face Ruth without the shield of shouting.
And this time, there would be nowhere to hide behind her driveway.
