Chapter 1: “Move This Ambulance”

“MOVE this ambulance! You’re blocking MY driveway!”

Karen Whitmore slapped her palm against the ambulance door hard enough to make the metal ring.

The red emergency lights flashed across her oversized sunglasses and the windows of the quiet suburban homes around her. It was late afternoon, the kind of peaceful weekday hour when most people expected nothing more dramatic than a delivery truck or a neighbor watering the lawn.

But the ambulance had stopped diagonally across the lower edge of Karen’s driveway.

To Karen, that was enough.

She pointed sharply toward the concrete beneath her white sneakers.

“I have somewhere to be!”

The Black EMT behind the driver’s door turned toward her. Marcus Reed was in his late thirties, tall, athletic, and already wearing medical gloves. His attention had been on the radio clipped to his chest, but now it was fixed on Karen.

“Ma’am, we’re responding to an emergency. Step back.”

Karen leaned toward him.

“I don’t care what you’re responding to. You can’t park here.”

Behind Marcus, another EMT hurried toward the neighboring house with a stretcher.

Karen noticed and stepped farther into the driveway.

“Then you’re going to explain why MY property doesn’t matter!”

Marcus’s expression tightened.

“Because someone inside could die.”

Karen pointed at the ambulance.

“Then THEY can wait—I was here first!”

The words had barely left her mouth when a door opened across the street.

“Karen!”

Linda Morales, a retired school secretary who lived three houses away, stepped onto her porch.

She wasn’t shouting. She didn’t need to.

“That’s Ruth’s house.”

Karen turned.

Linda pointed toward the neighboring home.

“Ruth lives there.”

Karen’s anger faltered for half a second.

The house behind the ambulance belonged to Ruth Callahan, a seventy-nine-year-old widow who had lived there for almost thirty years.

The second EMT had already disappeared through Ruth’s front door.

Marcus looked at Karen.

“That’s the patient.”

The driveway suddenly felt different beneath Karen’s feet.

Not because the ambulance had moved.

Because everyone nearby now knew exactly what she had been trying to make it do.

Karen glanced toward the house.

Then she noticed something else.

Linda was holding up her phone.

“I’ve got the whole thing on my doorbell camera,” Linda said quietly.

Karen stared at her.

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

The siren began to rise.

And for the first time, Karen realized the argument wasn’t going to disappear when the ambulance drove away.
