Chapter 1: “This Is Mine”

The sound of metal dragging across paint stopped Tom Bennett in his tracks.

He had been standing beside his dark blue sedan, halfway through carrying a grocery bag toward his front door, when he heard the long, ugly SKRRRRRRT from behind him.

He turned.

Karen Whitmore was already reaching for the next car.

She stood beside Tom’s sedan with a large ring of keys clenched in her right hand. Her pale blue cardigan strained across her broad shoulders, and her blonde-gray hair looked as though she’d been running her fingers through it all afternoon. Three deep scratches ran across the driver’s door of Tom’s car, bright against the dark paint.

“What the hell are you doing?” Tom shouted.

Karen turned slowly.

“This is mine.”

She pointed at the pavement beneath the parked cars.

Tom stared at her.

Then he looked at the scratches.

“You just keyed my car.”

“They’re all parked on my property,” Karen said. “Every one of them.”

Tom stepped between her and the silver sedan parked behind his.

“You’ve already damaged two doors.”

Karen tried to move around him.

Tom moved with her.

She raised her keys.

“Don’t touch that car.”

“I don’t need your permission,” she snapped. “I’ve lived here long enough to know what belongs to me.”

The confrontation drew people from their houses. Curtains shifted. A front door opened. Someone across the street began filming with a phone.

Karen seemed to notice none of it.

She pointed toward the pavement again.

“This entire strip is part of my lot.”

Tom looked down.

Under the cars, barely visible beneath years of dirt and tire marks, was a faded painted line running parallel to the row.

He had never paid attention to it before.

Neither had Karen.

Or at least, not until now.

She noticed it too.

For less than a second, her expression changed.

Then the certainty returned.

“See?” Tom said. “There’s a boundary line.”

Karen lifted her chin.

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“It proves enough for you to stop scratching people’s cars.”

She tried to step around him again.

Tom blocked her.

This time, a neighbor named Linda came out holding her phone.

“Karen,” Linda said carefully, “that’s Tom’s car.”

Karen’s face hardened.

“You people have been taking advantage of me for years.”

Tom almost laughed, but the sight of his ruined door stopped him.

“No one is taking advantage of you. We’re parking where everyone has parked for years.”

Karen pointed at the entire row.

“I decide who parks here.”

She raised her keys again.

Tom caught her wrist before the metal could reach the silver sedan.

She jerked backward.

“Let go of me!”

He released her immediately.

The street fell silent.

Karen looked around and finally seemed to understand that half the neighborhood was watching.

Instead of retreating, she stepped forward.

“Because I paid for this neighborhood,” she said, “I decide who gets to park here.”

Nobody answered.

Then Linda looked down at the faded line.

“Karen,” she said, “why don’t we find out who actually owns this strip?”

Karen’s eyes narrowed.

She didn’t answer.

But Tom did.

“Tomorrow morning, I’m getting the property records.”

Karen stared at him.

“Go ahead.”

She turned and walked toward her house.

Behind her, three damaged vehicles remained lined along the pavement.

And for the first time, the faded line beneath them was no longer something people ignored.

It was evidence.
