Chapter 5: The Line Nobody Knew About
The official survey changed the backyard completely.
The boundary did not follow the old fence.
Margaret’s property extended several feet beyond it.
That meant part of what everyone had assumed was the Brooks family’s side actually belonged to Margaret.
For years, the landscaping, the flower beds, and even a portion of the retaining wall had occupied land that legally belonged to her.
Margaret stared at the survey.
She could have demanded everything back.
She could have insisted the fence be moved.
She could have ordered the landscaping removed.
She could have made Denise pay for every inch of disputed property.
Claire expected her mother to do exactly that.
Margaret surprised her.
She asked the surveyor what would happen if they simply left the existing arrangement in place.
The answer was complicated.
Because the families had treated the boundary differently for so long, legal issues could arise depending on the circumstances and local law.
Margaret did not want a courtroom.
She wanted her home to feel like home again.
But she also wanted the underground conduit removed.
That was non-negotiable.
Denise agreed.
The contractor accepted responsibility for the installation and agreed to pay for the removal and repairs.
The fence would remain temporarily while both families consulted their attorneys and determined the best permanent solution.
For the first time in days, Margaret felt the pressure leaving her shoulders.
Then Tyler approached her.
He showed her the original video.
It was only a few minutes long.
Margaret watched herself walk through the gate with the hose.
She saw Tyler enter the frame.
She saw the moment she noticed the phone.
And she saw the exact instant when both of them noticed the disturbed ground.
The video proved something important.
Neither of them had caused the damage during that encounter.
The recording had accidentally preserved the beginning of the investigation.
Margaret thanked Tyler.
Then she told him something he clearly hadn’t expected.
She said he should have knocked on her door first.
Tyler nodded.
He admitted that he had assumed she was responsible before he had any proof.
Margaret understood how quickly assumptions could turn neighbors into enemies.
She had seen it happen in families.
She had watched people stop speaking over misunderstandings that began with something as small as a fence, a driveway, or a tree branch.
She did not want that to happen here.
Still, one question remained.
What had the contractor’s crew been doing on the property besides installing the conduit?
The surveyor’s maps gave them the clue.
