Chapter 3: What Was Under the Fence
Margaret called her daughter, Claire, before doing anything else.
Claire lived forty minutes away and had a habit of telling her mother not to handle difficult situations alone.
Margaret explained what she had found.
Claire’s first question was simple.
“Did you touch it?”
Margaret looked down at the conduit.
She had.
Only enough to see whether it was loose.
Claire immediately told her to leave it alone.
Margaret agreed.
She also asked Tyler to stop filming her and instead document the area around the fence.
For the first time, his behavior made more sense.
He had been recording because his mother wanted evidence.
But Margaret still didn’t like being filmed in her own backyard without warning.
Tyler eventually lowered the phone.
He explained that his mother believed a drainage line had been damaged after Margaret’s recent landscaping work.
Margaret knew that was impossible.
She had not hired anyone to dig near the fence.
In fact, she had spent the previous weekend out of town.
That detail changed everything.
If the trench was new, Margaret hadn’t made it.
By early evening, Claire arrived.
She brought a flashlight, gloves, and the calm determination Margaret had come to rely on.
Together they inspected the fence from Margaret’s side without disturbing the buried line.
Claire took photographs.
Tyler remained on the other side of the fence.
Then Denise Brooks appeared.
She was upset.
She accused Margaret of ignoring a boundary problem and said her son had been forced to document the situation because no one would listen to them.
Margaret wanted to argue.
Instead, she asked one question.
“What exactly do you believe I damaged?”
Denise pointed toward the ground.
A contractor had apparently told her that an irrigation line serving part of her yard had stopped working.
Margaret looked at the trench.
Then she looked at the fence.
The two problems seemed connected.
But not in the way Denise thought.
Claire noticed something else.
The buried conduit did not appear to travel from Margaret’s house toward Denise’s property.
It ran in the opposite direction.
It crossed the boundary.
Someone had installed something from the Brooks side toward Margaret’s property.
Denise became quiet.
Tyler checked the recording on his phone.
The young man had captured the entire discovery.
For Margaret, the recording suddenly became valuable.
It showed the condition of the ground before anyone could claim she had dug it herself.
Claire called the county utility department the next morning.
A technician came out with equipment.
After a short inspection, he delivered an uncomfortable answer.
The line was not a standard irrigation pipe.
It appeared to be a private electrical conduit.
And it was running underneath Margaret’s property.
Nobody at the house knew why.
That was when Margaret stopped thinking about the fence.
She started thinking about privacy.
Someone had placed something underground beneath her backyard without telling her.
And if the line carried electricity, the situation was no longer merely personal.
It could be dangerous.
