Chapter 1: The Camera at the Pool

The garden hose slapped softly against the stone patio as Margaret Hale came through the backyard gate.

She was carrying the heavy green hose with both hands, moving with the purposeful stride of someone who had already decided exactly what needed to be done. Her short gray hair lifted slightly in the afternoon breeze. She wore a light gray patterned top, dark pants, and sandals—the sort of clothes she normally wore for working around the house.

The swimming pool sat beside the patio, still and blue beneath the afternoon sun.

Margaret pulled the hose behind her.

She reached the pool, bent down, and lowered the nozzle into the water.

A small splash broke the quiet.

Then she straightened.

That was when she noticed the young man.

He had entered the patio from the opposite side and was standing only a few yards away. He was in his early twenties, wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans. His arm was raised, and an upright smartphone was pointed directly at her.

Margaret stopped.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The young man kept filming.

Margaret looked at the phone, then at his face.

There was no smile on him. No greeting. No explanation.

Just the camera.

She tightened her hand around the hose.

It was an unsettling feeling. Margaret had lived in the house for more than twenty years. She had raised her children there, watched grandchildren learn to swim in that pool, hosted Fourth of July cookouts on the patio, and spent countless quiet mornings watering flowers along the fence.

Her backyard was the one place she still considered completely private.

Now a stranger—or at least someone she barely knew—was recording her inside it.

She took one step toward him.

The young man did not lower the phone.

Margaret stopped again.

She had learned, over the years, that anger could make a person do foolish things. At sixty-one, she was not interested in shouting matches, threats, or grabbing someone’s property.

Instead, she stood beside the pool and watched him.

The hose continued to run.

The phone continued to record.

And neither of them seemed willing to be the first to look away.

What Margaret did not know was that the young man had not come into her yard merely because he wanted a confrontation.

He believed he had a reason.

And by the time Margaret discovered what that reason was, the simple act of filming would become the least troubling part of the afternoon.
