Chapter 4: The Contractor’s Story
The utility technician refused to disturb the conduit until its purpose could be identified.
That decision frustrated everyone.
Margaret wanted answers.
Denise wanted the matter resolved.
Tyler wanted to know why his mother had apparently been blamed for something she hadn’t done.
And Claire wanted everyone to stop making assumptions before facts were established.
A licensed electrician was brought in.
The electrician traced the conduit from Margaret’s property toward the Brooks house.
The line appeared to terminate near an exterior outlet on Denise’s side.
That seemed to confirm Denise’s suspicion that Margaret had somehow interfered with her utilities.
But then the electrician noticed something unusual.
The conduit had been installed recently.
Much more recently than the fence.
And the soil around it had been disturbed from the Brooks side.
Margaret felt a strange mixture of relief and sadness.
Someone had crossed onto her property.
But it was not Denise.
The electrician recognized the type of conduit.
He said it looked like material commonly used for temporary power connections at construction sites.
That led everyone to a contractor.
Denise had hired a landscaping company several months earlier to renovate her backyard.
The company had used temporary equipment while rebuilding a retaining wall.
The contractor insisted his crew had never crossed the property line.
He produced a rough sketch of the work area.
The sketch showed the fence as the boundary.
But the electrician’s measurements told a different story.
The fence itself was not exactly on the legal property line.
It was several feet inside Margaret’s property.
Margaret had lived there for two decades without knowing.
The discovery was almost absurd.
The fence everyone had been arguing about was not the true boundary at all.
The buried conduit had crossed onto Margaret’s land because the landscaping crew had apparently relied on the fence instead of the official survey.
Denise was embarrassed.
Margaret was angry.
But there was still a missing piece.
Who had placed the conduit?
The contractor eventually checked his work records.
A subcontractor had installed temporary power for several weeks.
That subcontractor had since stopped working for the company.
More importantly, the conduit had been left behind.
Nobody had removed it.
Nobody had told Margaret.
Nobody had obtained permission.
The situation had begun as a neighbor’s accusation and turned into a construction mistake involving private property.
Yet Margaret still had one concern.
Why had Tyler filmed her instead of simply coming to ask?
The answer came later that evening.
His mother had been frightened.
She believed Margaret was about to destroy evidence or move the fence again.
Tyler had thought recording everything was the safest way to protect his family.
Margaret understood the fear.
She didn’t approve of the method.
But she understood it.
The dispute could have ended there.
It didn’t.
Because the county surveyor arrived two days later with a set of official maps.
And those maps revealed something neither family had expected.
