The kitchen was cold with the gray pre-dawn draft that slipped beneath the warped wood of the back door. Clara didn’t turn on the overhead light. She worked by the pale, amber glow of the small utility desk lamp, her fingers flicking through a stack of yellowed tax receipts and crumpled grocery lists until she found the heavy plastic key ring.
The metal box housing the main breaker and the secondary utility relays was mounted in the pantry, tucked behind a heavy row of canned preserves that hadn’t been touched in three summers.
She shoved the sliding metal door aside, the small rollers grinding against a buildup of flour dust and dried grain. The gray steel door of the breaker box was cold to the touch, secured by a standard flat-head latch. She jammed the edge of a butter knife into the slot, gave it a sharp twist, and pulled the metal door open with a dry, metallic pop.
The interior smelled faintly of toasted copper and stale air. But tucked right behind the main seventy-amp relay—pinned securely between the plastic housing and the heavy feed cables—was a folded sheet of bright, heavy-stock blue paper.
Clara pulled it free, her heart giving a sharp, hard thump against her ribs.
