Chapter 6: The Storm

The repaired porch was finished two weeks later.

The nest was reinforced beneath the original structure, carefully positioned so the birds could continue using it without unnecessary disturbance.

For several days, everything seemed calm.

Then a storm arrived.

The weather service warned of strong winds.

By afternoon, the sky had turned dark.

Margaret watched the branches outside her kitchen window bending sharply.

She thought about the nest.

She stepped onto the porch.

Karen was already there.

“You’re thinking the same thing I am,” Karen said.

Margaret nodded.

The wind slammed into the side of the building.

The nest shook.

Karen instinctively moved toward it.

Then she stopped.

She looked at Margaret.

“What do we do?”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“We call someone.”

That was the difference now.

Karen no longer reached for the hose.

She reached for the phone.

The wildlife center advised them to leave the nest alone unless it actually fell.

So they waited.

Rain struck the porch roof.

The nest swayed.

Margaret wanted to intervene.

Karen wanted to intervene.

Neither did.

They understood now that helping sometimes meant resisting the urge to take control.

For nearly an hour, the two women watched from inside.

Then the wind weakened.

The nest remained.

The mother bird returned at dusk.

Karen let out a breath.

“That little thing is tougher than I am.”

Margaret laughed.

“Don’t tell anyone.”

Karen smiled.

It was the first time Margaret had seen her laugh without defensiveness.

The next morning, the specialist inspected the nest.

The chicks were healthy.

One by one, they were beginning to prepare for the next stage of life.

The smallest bird had recovered enough to return.

Margaret watched as the specialist carefully placed it back.

The mother bird arrived minutes later.

The reunion was quiet.

No dramatic moment.

No grand display.

Just a parent returning to her young.

Margaret wiped her eyes.

Karen looked away.

“Allergies,” she muttered.

Margaret laughed again.

“Of course.”

But there was still one final piece of unfinished business.

Karen had damaged more than a nest.

She had damaged trust.

And trust was harder to repair than wood.
