Chapter 1: The Spray

The first thing Margaret Ellis heard was the high, angry hiss of pressurized water.

She stepped through the back door of the shared porch just in time to see a powerful stream blasting upward beneath the roof.

The target was not a stain.

It was a bird’s nest.

And the woman holding the hose seemed completely unconcerned.

Karen Whitmore stood in the middle of the porch in a bright red T-shirt, black leggings, and worn white sneakers, her messy dirty-blonde hair bouncing around her shoulders as she aimed the green hose directly at the nest.

Water hammered the little bundle of twigs.

The nest shook.

Margaret’s stomach dropped.

“Get that hose away from those babies!”

Karen turned, but she did not release the trigger.

“These filthy birds are making a disgusting mess!” she shouted. “I’m cleaning this whole porch whether you like it or not!”

Margaret crossed the porch in three quick steps.

She grabbed the hose just below the nozzle and forced it downward.

The stream swung across the wooden floor, spraying both women’s shoes.

Karen jerked the hose back.

“Don’t touch that!”

“Turn it off!”

“It’s a shared porch!”

“It’s a living nest!”

For several seconds, neither woman gave ground.

The hose stretched between them like a rope in a tug-of-war. Karen pulled with both hands, her face tightening with anger. Margaret held on, her gray hair falling forward as she fought to keep the nozzle away from the roof.

Then Margaret reached for the shutoff valve.

Karen saw what she was doing.

“No!”

Margaret twisted it hard.

The water stopped.

The sudden silence was almost shocking.

Only droplets continued falling from the roof.

Karen stared at the limp hose in her hands as though someone had taken away something that belonged to her.

Then Margaret looked up.

The nest was leaning.

It had shifted several inches from where it had been tucked safely against the beam.

“Karen,” she said quietly.

For the first time, Karen looked.

A wet branch beneath the nest had cracked.

The nest tilted.

Margaret reached upward instinctively.

A small movement appeared between the soaked twigs.

One tiny beak opened.

A baby bird.

Karen’s expression changed.

Her irritation remained, but uncertainty slipped underneath it.

The branch gave another sharp crack.

Margaret lunged toward the nest.

The nest tipped farther.

And then one thin piece of wood broke loose and dropped onto the porch.

Neither woman spoke.

Margaret stretched both hands upward, trying to keep the nest from sliding completely free.

Karen stood frozen beside her.

For the first time that afternoon, she seemed to understand that this was no longer about a mess on a shared porch.

Something living had been placed in danger.

And neither woman knew yet whether they could save it.
