CHAPTER 2: THE SHADOW ON THE COPING

The sliding screen above did not slam; it glided on greased aluminium runners with a dry, metallic rattle that cut through the stagnant heat.

E2 didn’t look up at the second-floor balcony where Mrs. Vance’s pale, veined hand still gripped the edge of the wrought-iron railing. The lens of the smartphone remained locked forward, a cold black eye reflecting the distorted, pink-clad silhouette of E1 across the turquoise water. Every micro-tremor in E1’s grip on the empty woven sack was registered by the frame, amplified by the digital zoom.

“You’ve got no business standing there,” E1 snapped, taking another aggressive half-step toward the pool’s edge. Her tennis shoe ground down directly onto a stray fragment of wet mulch, crushing it into the porous grey concrete with a wet, abrasive hiss. “I’m on the landscaping subcommittee. This is routine seasonal clearing. You’re interfering with authorized property maintenance.”

“Seasonal clearing doesn’t involve dumping sodden crabgrass onto the communal coping tiles,” E2 said. Her voice remained flat, rhythmic, anchored to the slow, measured cadence of a metronome. She didn’t drop her arm. Her shoulder muscles were locked, enduring the dead-weight burn of holding the device steady at eye level. “Section four, paragraph twelve of the master covenants. You know it as well as I do, Elena.”

At the use of her given name rather than her elected title, E1’s shoulders stiffened. A sharp, ugly twitch pulled at the corner of her left eye.

“Don’t you dare quote the bylaws to me,” E1 hissed, her voice rising, losing its polished board-meeting timber and sharpening into something ragged and thin. “I keep this development from sliding into a slum while people like you leave trash cans out past sunset and park your unregistered trucks in guest bays. You think a little phone screen scares me? I have the president’s direct line. I have the financial ledgers.”

“Then you shouldn’t mind the board seeing how you handle the grounds,” E2 replied smoothly, her thumb imperceptibly adjusting the focus ring on the screen.

As the digital aperture shifted, a detail half-buried beneath the decaying brown heap caught the light. Protruding from the torn seam of the yard-waste sack, pinned beneath a clod of dark, clay-heavy earth, was a crumpled white strip of thermal paper—a municipal water-utility disconnection notice bearing an address three doors down from E1’s pristine, manicured lawn. The ink was smeared by moisture, but the bold red header of past-due administrative fees was unmistakable even across a ten-foot span of water.

E1’s gaze flickered downward. The moment her eyes registered the exposed corner of the utility notice, the color drained entirely from her face, leaving her skin the grey-white of unpainted drywall.

“Give me that phone,” E1 breathed, the tactical retreat of her voice vanishing into a sudden, desperate surge of panic. She didn’t walk; she lunged toward the narrow aluminum service bridge that spanned the shallow end of the pool.
