Chapter 5: The Neighbor Who Knew Too Much
By afternoon, Mark had reviewed nearly a week of recordings.
The pattern became impossible to ignore.
The white service van appeared repeatedly.
Sometimes it stopped near Karen’s house.
Sometimes near Mark’s.
Sometimes near the community mailbox.
Nothing illegal was visible in every frame.
But there were enough unusual movements to justify concern.
Then they discovered something unexpected.
The person in the dark jacket was not Darren.
It was Darren’s assistant, a man named Paul.
Paul had access to service keys.
He also had access to several homes in the neighborhood when residents requested maintenance.
Mark and Karen contacted the police again.
But before anyone arrived, another package disappeared.
This time, Mark had proof.
His camera showed a man walking toward his porch.
The man wore the same dark jacket.
He picked up a package.
Then he looked directly at the camera.
Instead of leaving immediately, he stepped close to the lens.
He smiled.
Mark felt his skin crawl.
The man knew.
He knew exactly where the camera was.
And he knew it was recording.
The footage ended when the man covered the lens.
Mark looked at Karen.
“You weren’t wrong about someone watching.”
Karen shook her head.
“I was wrong about you.”
It was the first honest apology she had given.
But the situation had changed.
The police arrived and began collecting evidence.
Paul was identified through company records.
Investigators discovered that several residents had reported missing packages over the previous months.
The pattern suggested unauthorized access, but the case was still developing.
Then came the most important discovery.
Mark’s original camera had stored more footage than he realized.
The moment Karen had ripped it from the wall had not stopped the recording.
Its internal storage had continued operating.
And because the camera was still connected to the home’s network, the final sequence had been uploaded automatically.
That meant the footage contained everything.
Karen approaching.
Karen removing the camera.
Karen running away with it.
And, most importantly, the person who had appeared near the property before her.
The police asked Karen why she had been so desperate to destroy or remove the camera.
She finally told them.
She had been afraid the camera had recorded her following Paul.
She feared she would be blamed for trespassing.
She had panicked.
In trying to protect herself, she had made herself look guilty.
Mark understood something then.
Fear could make decent people do foolish things.
But fear did not erase responsibility.
Karen had crossed a line.
She had to face that.
So did Paul.
The next morning, the neighborhood association called an emergency meeting.
Every resident wanted answers.
And one resident arrived carrying a folder that changed the entire case.
