Chapter 5: The Explanation
Karen finally gave an explanation three days later.
She claimed she had removed the seal because she believed the cabinet was defective.
According to her, she had seen the protective cover sticking out and assumed someone had repaired it incorrectly.
She said she had intended to report it.
Then she changed her story.
She said she had intended to fix it herself.
Then she admitted she had been angry.
The inconsistencies made the board uncomfortable.
Not because they wanted to punish her.
Because they needed to know what had actually happened.
Ray returned with the maintenance records.
The cabinet had been installed years earlier and had passed its latest inspection.
There had been no repair order.
No complaint.
No maintenance request.
Then Frank remembered something.
The morning Karen had confronted him, she had said the cabinet had “been like that for years.”
But the maintenance records showed the protective panel had been replaced only six months earlier.
Frank brought that up at the meeting.
Karen’s expression tightened.
“I don’t keep track of every maintenance job.”
“No,” Frank said. “But you were very sure it had been broken for years.”
Karen stood.
“I’ve had enough.”
She started toward the door.
Linda stopped her.
“There is one more issue.”
She handed Karen a notice.
The HOA wasn’t imposing a permanent ban or trying to humiliate her.
It was requiring reimbursement for the damaged cabinet, professional inspection costs caused by the incident, and a temporary restriction from performing unauthorized maintenance on common-area equipment.
Karen stared at the document.
“You’re treating me like a criminal.”
“No,” Linda said. “We’re treating this like a safety issue.”
Karen looked around the room.
For the first time, she seemed to realize that the residents weren’t merely angry with her.
They were frightened.
Many of them lived alone.
Many had mobility limitations.
A fire extinguisher wasn’t decoration.
It was one of the things they hoped they would never need—and desperately needed if the day ever came.
Karen left without signing anything.
But the next morning, something unexpected happened.
She didn’t appeal the decision.
Instead, she asked Linda for a private meeting.
