Chapter 3: The Woman Across the Courtyard
Frank didn’t sleep well that night.
He kept thinking about the cabinet.
Not because of the broken plastic.
Because of what might have happened if there had been a fire.
His wife, Margaret, had died several years earlier after a long illness, and since then Frank had become especially protective of the quiet life they had built together.
He liked the retirement community because people looked after one another.
At least, they used to.
The next morning, Frank received a message from Evelyn Harper, an eighty-two-year-old widow who lived across the courtyard.
She wanted to speak privately.
Evelyn invited him inside.
“I saw Karen near that cabinet two days before she smashed it,” she said.
Frank sat down.
“What was she doing?”
“Complaining.”
“About the cabinet?”
Evelyn nodded.
“She said the red box made Building C look cheap.”
That sounded like Karen.
But Evelyn had more to say.
“She was holding something.”
Frank leaned forward.
“What?”
“I couldn’t see clearly. My eyesight isn’t what it used to be.”
Evelyn hesitated.
“But I heard her say, ‘Nobody checks these things anyway.’”
Frank felt a chill.
Evelyn then handed him a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
She had taken it from her patio that morning.
The photograph wasn’t clear, but it showed Karen standing beside the fire-extinguisher cabinet.
In her hand was a small plastic object.
Frank recognized it immediately.
The tamper seal.
The photograph didn’t prove why Karen had removed it.
But it proved she had been handling the cabinet before the hammer incident.
Frank gave the photograph to Linda.
The HOA board scheduled a meeting.
Karen arrived furious.
She claimed everyone was “ganging up” on her because she had tried to improve the property.
She insisted the cabinet was an eyesore and accused Frank of exaggerating the incident.
Then Linda placed the photograph on the table.
Karen went silent.
Only for a moment.
Then she leaned forward.
“That proves nothing.”
“No,” Linda said calmly. “But your own words on Frank’s recording are becoming more important.”
Karen stared at Frank.
“You recorded me?”
“Yes.”
Her face hardened.
The board didn’t vote on punishment that night.
Instead, they requested a full inspection of every emergency cabinet in the community.
Karen had accidentally triggered something much larger than an argument.
For the first time, the HOA wasn’t investigating her behavior alone.
It was investigating whether other residents had been put at risk.
