Chapter 4: What the Camera Saw
The community’s security cameras had never seemed particularly important to Frank before.
Most residents barely noticed them.
But one camera faced the walkway outside Building C.
Linda obtained the footage.
It changed everything.
The video showed Karen approaching the fire-extinguisher cabinet two days before the hammer incident.
She looked around.
Then she opened the cabinet.
She removed the tamper seal.
She didn’t take the extinguisher.
She didn’t damage anything.
Instead, she stood there for nearly a minute, inspecting the cabinet.
Then she closed it and walked away.
Two days later, she returned with the hammer.
Frank watched the footage with Linda and Ray.
Nobody spoke.
The important detail wasn’t that Karen had broken the cabinet.
It was that she had knowingly tampered with the emergency equipment beforehand.
Ray explained that the seal existed for a reason.
“If someone breaks or removes it,” he said, “we know the equipment may have been accessed.”
Frank asked what would have happened if the extinguisher had been needed before the inspection.
Ray’s answer was quiet.
“We wouldn’t have known someone had been inside the cabinet.”
That sentence stayed with Frank.
The HOA arranged for every extinguisher in the complex to be inspected again.
Three required servicing.
None had been completely disabled, but the extra inspection revealed how easily a small act could create uncertainty during an emergency.
Karen was furious when she learned the community had spent money on the inspection.
“You’re wasting everyone’s dues because of one stupid cabinet,” she told Linda.
Linda looked at her.
“No. We’re spending money because we don’t know what else has been tampered with.”
Karen threatened to contact an attorney.
Frank expected the room to explode.
Instead, Evelyn spoke from the back.
“Karen, nobody cares what color the cabinet is.”
Karen turned.
“We care that it works when someone needs it.”
The room went silent.
For once, Karen had no immediate answer.
But the conflict was no longer about a damaged cabinet.
The HOA now had documented evidence.
And there was still one question nobody had answered:
Why had Karen removed the seal in the first place?
