CHAPTER 1: THE DRIED STAIN ON THE DRIVEWAY
The smell of wet asphalt and cooling engine block hung thick in the narrow gap between the garage wall and the tailgate. A long-handled steel tool rested against the worker’s thigh, its weathered wooden grip scarred by years of friction. He didn’t shift his weight. His boots stayed planted on the grit-streaked concrete, right beside the dark, spreading patch that bled out from beneath the pickup’s front tire.
Across from him, the younger man in the mud-stained jacket pulled his arms inward, his fingers curling instinctively into his gray sweatpants pockets before snapping back out. A nervous twitch of the jaw gave him away.
“What are you talking about?” the younger man demanded, his voice cracking slightly on the upward inflection, cutting through the low hum of distant traffic.
The worker didn’t blink. His stubbled jaw tightened until the muscle bunched hard beneath his skin, eyes fixed entirely on the younger man’s shifting stance.
“You know exactly what happened here,” the worker said, his voice level, stripped of any theatrical bluster, carrying the heavy finality of a closed door.
The younger man’s hand lowered by inches, his gaze dropping briefly to the wet patch glistening under the harsh afternoon glare before snapping back up. “We didn’t do anything.”
Beside him, the second man—older, built thicker through the chest, wearing a neutral tan jacket that had seen better seasons—kept his lips sealed. He didn’t nod, didn’t step back, but his eyes darted from the worker’s hands to the edge of the tool handle with wary calculation.
Behind the glass of the front window, obscured by a warped screen and the glare of the interior lights, the silhouette of a man in a dark plaid shirt remained entirely motionless. He watched the tableau unfold like an auditor reviewing a ledger he already knew didn’t balance.
The worker shifted the tool just an inch, the metal scraping softly against his canvas jacket. He pointed the tip downward, toward the dark moisture staining the concrete.
“Then explain that.”
