Chapter 4: The Bill Karen Never Expected
The neighborhood association eventually became involved.
Not because Daniel had complained about Karen personally, but because the dispute had begun affecting several residents.
A meeting was scheduled at the community clubhouse.
Karen arrived wearing the same confident expression she had worn in Daniel’s driveway.
Daniel brought a folder.
Inside were photographs, meter readings, and printed stills from the security camera.
He didn’t need to exaggerate.
The footage spoke for itself.
Karen could be seen connecting the cable.
She could be seen looking around before doing it.
She could be seen disconnecting it later.
And there were multiple dates.
The association representative asked Karen whether she had permission.
Karen said no.
Then she argued that she had never realized the electricity would cost much.
Daniel slid one document across the table.
It was the calculation from the utility data.
The amount wasn’t enormous.
But it wasn’t nothing.
More importantly, the issue wasn’t just the money.
The representative asked whether Karen would reimburse Daniel.
Karen hesitated.
Daniel expected another argument.
Instead, she asked how much.
That was the first sign that the fight might finally be moving toward resolution.
But Daniel had one condition.
“I don’t want just the money,” he said. “I want you to stop using our property.”
Karen looked offended.
“I already stopped.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
The truth was that the physical access mattered more than the reimbursement.
Money could be replaced.
Privacy was different.
The association required Karen to provide reimbursement and formally acknowledge that she had no permission to use another homeowner’s electrical outlets.
Karen signed.
But she left the meeting angry.
Daniel thought that was the end.
It wasn’t.
Three days later, his wife noticed something strange.
The outdoor outlet cover was slightly crooked.
Daniel inspected it.
There was no cable.
No vehicle.
Nothing obvious.
But the security camera had captured someone approaching the garage late that night.
The person never connected a charger.
They simply stood near the outlet.
Then they walked away.
Daniel recognized the clothes.
Karen.
He called her.
She answered.
“Why were you at my garage at midnight?”
Silence.
Then Karen said, “I was checking something.”
“What?”
Another silence.
Daniel realized she had been trying to determine whether he had installed something to prevent another connection.
The next morning, Daniel installed a lockable cover over the exterior outlet.
He also repositioned the camera so the driveway and side of the garage were clearly visible.
There would be no more guessing.
Still, he wondered why Karen had returned.
Had she been planning to charge again?
Or was something else happening?
The answer arrived sooner than he expected.
A week later, Karen’s SUV stopped working.
And Daniel was the person she came to ask for help.
