CHAPTER 1: THE TEETH IN THE CEDAR

The two-stroke oil tasted like zinc on the back of Nora’s tongue.

She did not ease off the throttle. The sixteen-inch guide bar kicked once against a hidden framing nail, spitting an orange ember into the wet grass, before the tungsten chain chewed clean through the middle crossbeam. Treated cedar parted with a wet, splintering crack.

Ten feet of six-foot dog-ear panels shuddered, tilted inward toward the freshly raked mulch, and slammed into the dirt. The thump shuddered straight through the soles of Nora’s leather work boots.

Behind the falling timber, the gap opened.

Across the lawn, thirty paces away, the French doors of the brick colonial were already open. Julian had left them swinging. He wasn’t running—running conceded panic, and Julian never conceded anything—but his strides down the flagstone path were long, rigid, and deliberate. His navy polo was pressed; his khaki trousers held a sharp crease down the shin. His hands were raised at chest height, palms open, the universal posture of a man pretending to de-escalate while closing the distance to strike.

Nora let her index finger slacken on the trigger. The high-pitched scream of the saw plummeted to a ragged, loping idle. Chug-chug-chug. The chain ticked against the sprocket, hot metal pinging as blue exhaust curled up between them, turning the humid afternoon air sour.

She did not set the saw down. She shifted her left hand forward along the top handlebar, knuckles white inside stiff split-cowhide gloves, locking her front elbow. Her right hand remained curled around the rear grip, the kill switch right under her thumb.

Julian stopped four paces back. Just outside the guide bar’s reach. His eyes flicked down to the idling chain, then up to Nora’s face, searching for a tremor, an apology, a crack in the glass.

“What are you doing to that fence?”

His voice didn’t rise to a shout. It was low, tight, and clipped at the margins, the way he spoke to contractors when an invoice exceeded the bid. His chest rose beneath the cotton knit, his jaw set so hard that the muscle beneath his ear twitched like a hooked worm.

Nora looked at him through the heat haze rising off the muffler. She didn’t blink. To blink was to yield ground, and this ground had been shaved six inches at a time for eleven months while the city permits gathered dust.

“You put it four inches past the pin, Julian.”

“The surveyor drove those pins twenty years ago,” he said, taking half a step sideways, angling toward the gap she had just carved. His eyes kept darting past her boots, down to the exposed root bed where the bottom runner had rested. “You call the township. You don’t bring equipment onto my parcel.”

“It isn’t your parcel.”

She let the tip of the saw dip two inches, gesturing toward the raw, sheared stump of the 4×4 post.

The wood inside was pale, saturated with rain and copper-tinted preservative. But tucked neatly inside the hollow core of the bottom split—hidden beneath the grade level where the post had been anchored into the quick-set mix—sat a flat, galvanized plate, freshly bolted with heavy hex lags that hadn’t oxidized yet.

Stenciled across the zinc face in black industrial ink was a serial number and a county seal stamped two weeks ago. Not twenty years.

Julian’s gaze dropped to the plate. His throat worked once, the blood draining from his temples until his skin looked like wet paper.

He stepped forward, his boots crossing the sawdust line.
