Chapter 5: The Woman Who Finally Spoke
The breakthrough came from Evelyn Turner.
She arrived at David’s house one morning carrying a manila envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Karen standing beside the Turners’ side gate months earlier.
The picture had been taken accidentally by a motion camera.
Karen wasn’t entering.
She was studying the lock.
Evelyn explained that she and Frank had installed the camera after several packages disappeared.
They had never known what to make of the footage.
Now they did.
David brought the photograph to Linda.
This time, the HOA board could no longer treat the incidents as isolated misunderstandings.
A formal review was opened.
Karen was asked to return the maintenance key.
She refused.
She claimed she had “every right” to possess it.
That decision changed her position immediately.
The board suspended her access to association facilities pending review.
Karen responded by filing a complaint against David.
She accused him of creating an unsafe environment by operating a private pool without sufficient community oversight.
But the accusation backfired.
The board requested the actual pool maintenance records.
David had them.
Every inspection.
Every chemical test.
Every service invoice.
The records showed his pool had been properly maintained throughout the summer.
Karen’s original justification disappeared.
There had never been a water-quality problem.
There had never been an HOA inspection order.
There had never been permission.
The pool incident was exactly what it had looked like from the beginning.
Unauthorized entry.
But the consequences were now bigger than one afternoon beside a swimming pool.
Several residents came forward.
And every new statement described the same pattern:
Karen believed the neighborhood gave her authority over other people’s property.
Now the board had to decide what to do about it.
