Chapter 4: The Second Key
David began asking questions quietly.
He spoke with neighbors who had complained about missing packages and opened gates.
One elderly couple, Frank and Evelyn Turner, remembered something strange.
Several months earlier, Karen had offered to “help” them inspect a leaking outdoor faucet while they were away.
They had refused.
Another neighbor remembered seeing Karen near the community storage building late one evening.
But nobody had proof.
Then David remembered the towel.
It had seemed ridiculous at first.
Now it mattered.
Karen had planned to stay.
She hadn’t simply wandered into the pool.
She had believed she had permission.
The question was why.
Linda eventually discovered that a former board member had once given Karen temporary access to a maintenance key during an emergency.
The key had never been properly returned.
That explained how she could enter some common areas.
It did not explain why she believed that gave her authority over private homes.
David requested copies of the HOA’s written rules concerning private property.
The language was clear.
Common areas belonged to the association.
Private yards did not.
Private pools did not.
Private gates did not.
The distinction had always been there.
It simply hadn’t been enforced.
Then Linda found something else.
A handwritten list inside the maintenance office.
Names.
Addresses.
Short notes beside them.
Pool — questionable.
Fence — needs inspection.
Garage — possible violation.
David recognized several names.
Every house on the list belonged to an older resident.
People who lived alone.
People who were less likely to challenge someone who claimed to be acting for the HOA.
At the bottom was one final address.
David’s.
Beside it were three words:
Pool. Gate. Camera.
For the first time, David realized the pool incident wasn’t merely about Karen.
Someone had been keeping track of residents.
And Karen had been doing more than “checking water.”
