CHAPTER 1: THE IMPACT AT COPING EDGE

The first blow did not sound like metal against glass; it sounded like an engine block cracking open in the dead of August.

Mark Vance was standing at the kitchen island, his hand wrapped around a glass of ice water, when the shockwave traveled through the double-pane sliding glass door. The sharp, concussive ring rattled the cutlery drawer. Before the echo could die against the dark drywall of his living room, a second strike tore through the quiet—a brittle, crystalline crunch followed by the dull thud of heavy steel biting into flagstone.

He did not turn on the indoor lights. In two strides, Mark crossed the hardwood floor, unlocked the slider, and stepped out onto the wet stone patio.

The night air was heavy with the smell of damp cedar mulch and ozone. Beside the curved perimeter of the new swimming pool, the ambient turquoise glow from beneath the waterline cast long, shivering shadows across the masonry. In the middle of that blue light stood Evelyn Cross.

She was dressed as if she had just walked out of an evening zoning board meeting—a tailored rust-red blazer with sharp shoulder seams, a cream silk blouse, and black flared trousers that draped neatly over the tops of tan leather heels. But in her right hand, knuckles white against the dark hickory grain, she gripped the long handle of an eight-pound industrial sledgehammer.

At her feet, the curved stone coping was ruined.

Three of Mark’s black-framed, low-voltage LED lantern fixtures lay crushed into the flagstone. Tempered glass was strewn across the wet stone like spilled ice, sparkling under the moonlight. The cast-aluminum housings had been sheared in half, their delicate copper wire leads severed and exposed, spitting faint, dying sparks into the humid dark.

Mark stopped five feet away, his sneakers planting firmly outside the weapon’s sweep. His jaw locked, but his hands stayed open, held waist-high, completely visible.

Evelyn did not flinch. She let the heavy rectangular steel head of the hammer drop with a dull scrape, resting it low against the outside of her right ankle. Her sharp silver-blonde bob did not have a single hair out of place. Her chin tilted up, catching the blue reflection of the pool, her pale eyes narrowing into a look of practiced, unassailable disgust.

“Those lights shine into my house every night,” Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of the pool filter without a tremor of doubt. “So I handled them myself.”

Mark felt the cold air hit the sweat on the back of his neck. His pulse hammered in his ears, but his voice came out flat, stripped of every emotion except iron.

He pointed a single finger straight down at the glittering debris between them.

“You destroyed my property,” Mark said. “Put that hammer down now.”

Evelyn’s grip on the hickory handle did not loosen. Instead, her mouth curved into a thin, condescending line that held no fear of the dark, the damage, or the man standing in front of her. But as she shifted her weight, the pale floodlight on the corner of the garage caught something she had dropped onto the flagstone just behind her heels—a folded, yellowed document with an official county seal, bearing a red grease-pencil notation that had nothing to do with the lights at all.
