Chapter 3: Waiting at the Gate
After landing, passengers began gathering their belongings.
Daniel waited for the aisle to clear.
The damaged tray table was still closed.
Margaret stood several rows behind him.
Karen moved quickly toward the front.
Daniel assumed she was leaving.
Instead, she stopped near the gate and approached a customer-service employee.
“I need to report an incident with another passenger.”
Daniel heard her voice.
He turned.
Karen pointed toward him.
“He repeatedly assaulted my seat and made me feel unsafe.”
Daniel stood still.
For a moment, he could hardly believe what he was hearing.
“I did what?”
The employee asked everyone to lower their voices.
Karen continued.
“I was trying to eat. He kept reclining into me and became aggressive when I asked him to stop.”
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
She stepped forward.
“I have a recording.”
Karen’s face changed.
The employee watched the video.
No one spoke while it played.
The footage showed Karen’s hand reaching between the seats.
The shove.
The tray snapping upward.
Daniel turning around.
Then Karen withdrawing her hand.
The employee watched it again.
Karen’s shoulders dropped slightly.
“I was only trying to get his attention.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You told them I attacked your seat.”
“I was upset.”
“You lied.”
The employee interrupted before the argument could grow.
“Ma’am, the recording contradicts the account you just gave me.”
Karen said nothing.
Then the employee noticed the damaged tray table noted in the flight report.
“Were you told not to touch the seat?”
“Yes,” Lisa, the flight attendant, confirmed.
Karen folded her arms.
“I was frustrated.”
“That doesn’t change the instruction,” Lisa said.
The employee explained that the airline would retain the incident report and that maintenance would inspect the tray table.
Daniel thought that was the end.
Then the employee added one more thing.
“Because there was physical contact with another passenger’s seat and property, security has been notified to review the incident.”
Karen stared at him.
“You’re calling security?”
“No one is saying you’re under arrest. We are documenting what occurred.”
For the first time, Karen looked genuinely nervous.
She picked up her purse.
As security personnel approached the gate, Margaret noticed something else.
Karen’s phone screen was still open.
The note accusing Daniel was visible.
But the timestamp on it was later than the incident.
Margaret said nothing.
She simply remembered it.
