Chapter 2: The Video on Row 18
The woman with the phone was named Margaret Ellis, a retired school secretary traveling to Phoenix to visit her sister.
She had not started recording because she expected trouble.
She had started because Karen’s first shove had been so sudden that Margaret instinctively pulled out her phone.
Now she watched the clip twice.
There was no question about what happened.
Karen’s hand reached between the seats.
Her palm struck the tray table.
The table snapped upward.
Daniel jumped.
Then Karen withdrew her hand before anyone could see it.
Margaret hesitated.
She disliked getting involved in other people’s arguments. At sixty-seven, she had learned that many disputes became worse when strangers entered them.
But this was different.
The flight attendant had already been given a false version of events.
Margaret quietly showed the recording to Daniel.
His jaw tightened.
“That’s exactly what she did.”
“I know.”
He looked toward Karen.
She was staring straight ahead, apparently absorbed in the safety card.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Would you be willing to show that to the crew if they ask?”
Margaret nodded.
Meanwhile, the flight attendant, Lisa Carter, had begun documenting the damaged tray table.
The damage was minor, but the mechanism was no longer locking correctly.
Lisa crouched beside Daniel.
“I’m going to have maintenance look at this when we land. For now, please keep it closed.”
Daniel nodded.
Karen suddenly turned.
“Are you writing me up?”
Lisa remained calm.
“I’m documenting an incident involving a damaged tray table.”
“I didn’t damage anything.”
Lisa didn’t argue.
“I didn’t say you did.”
Karen looked toward Margaret.
Then she noticed the phone.
Her expression hardened.
“You were recording me?”
Margaret slipped the phone into her purse.
“I recorded what happened.”
“You have no right to record people.”
Daniel looked back.
“You’ve got to be kidding.”
Karen leaned into the aisle.
“I don’t appreciate being filmed.”
Margaret answered quietly.
“I don’t appreciate being blamed for something I didn’t do.”
The words landed harder than shouting would have.
Karen sat back.
For the remainder of the flight, she said nothing.
But she did not look frightened.
She looked calculating.
When the plane began its descent, Karen quietly opened the notes app on her phone.
She typed one sentence:
Passenger in 18C harassing me.
She saved it.
And Daniel, unaware of what she had written, was about to discover that the argument would not end when the plane landed.
