Chapter 1: The Seat in Front of Her

The tray table snapped upward with a sharp plastic crack.

Daniel Brooks jerked around so quickly that his paper cup tipped, sending a small wave of water across his napkin and the edge of his sandwich.

“What was that?”

Behind him, Karen Whitmore sat perfectly upright.

Her hand was already back in her lap.

For a second, neither of them moved.

Daniel stared at the tray table, which was now hanging crookedly from one side. Then he turned farther around and saw Karen glaring at him through oversized black-framed glasses.

“Did you just shove my seat?”

Karen lifted both hands.

“I barely touched it.”

Daniel looked at the tray table again.

He had been eating a small sandwich while reading an email on his phone. His seat was reclined only slightly, no more than the normal position allowed by the seat mechanism.

Karen leaned forward.

“You’ve got that thing practically in my lap.”

“It’s my tray table,” Daniel said. “And I’m using it.”

“You don’t get to slam that seat into my space just because you bought a ticket.”

Daniel blinked.

The seat had not slammed into anything. Karen had pushed it.

Several passengers nearby had begun watching.

Daniel steadied his cup and looked toward the aisle. “You put your hands on my seat.”

Karen’s expression changed instantly.

“I was trying to get your attention.”

“You could have spoken to me.”

“I did.”

“You didn’t.”

Karen reached forward again, this time grabbing the top edge of his seat.

Daniel pulled away.

“Don’t touch my seat.”

That finally brought a flight attendant over.

“Is everything all right here?”

Karen immediately sat back and folded her hands across her stomach.

“He keeps pushing his seat into me,” she said.

Daniel stared at her.

“He just knocked my tray table loose.”

The flight attendant examined the tray mechanism, then looked at Karen.

“Ma’am, please don’t touch another passenger’s seat or belongings.”

Karen’s face tightened.

“I wasn’t touching his belongings.”

“You touched the seatback,” Daniel said.

The attendant calmly repeated the instruction.

Karen looked away.

For the moment, the confrontation appeared finished.

But as the flight attendant moved down the aisle, a woman across the aisle quietly lowered her phone.

She had recorded the entire exchange.

And she had captured something Karen didn’t realize anyone had seen.

Her hand clearly reaching between the seats.
