Chapter 1: “You Are NOT Coming Through Here”

Karen Whitmore planted herself directly in front of the stretcher.

The ambulance had barely stopped before she stepped into its path, throwing both arms wide as the wheels rolled toward the condominium entrance.

The stretcher stopped hard.

Karen slapped one palm against the ambulance’s driver-side window.

“You are NOT bringing that thing through my community!” she shouted. “Back that ambulance up, right now!”

Inside the ambulance, the driver flinched. In the back, a paramedic looked sharply toward the commotion.

Thirty-five-year-old Emily Carter jumped down from the rear compartment and grabbed the stretcher handle.

“Ma’am, move,” she said.

Karen turned toward her, her oversized purple sunglasses flashing in the afternoon light. Her bright red-and-hot-pink blouse looked almost painfully colorful against the quiet beige walls of the retirement-community condos. Her yellow pants and purple-and-gold accessories made her impossible to overlook.

She pointed toward the driveway.

“I run this place.”

Emily stared at her for a second.

“No, you don’t.”

Karen’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know who you’re talking to.”

Emily’s voice remained controlled, but urgency sharpened every word.

“Someone inside needs medical attention. You’re standing in the way.”

Karen shifted sideways.

So did Emily.

The stretcher moved six inches.

Karen shifted again.

The stretcher stopped.

“You’re not authorized to bring emergency equipment through the main entrance,” Karen snapped. “This is a private community.”

Emily glanced toward the building.

“We’re not here to debate your community rules.”

“Then you’re going to listen to me.”

“No. We’re going to the patient.”

For a moment, the two women stood inches apart.

Then Karen stepped sideways again.

Emily immediately changed direction.

She pulled the stretcher toward a narrow side corridor leading around the building.

Karen followed.

“You better not think you’re ignoring me!” she shouted.

Emily didn’t answer.

She simply kept moving.

The second paramedic, forty-two-year-old Marcus Reed, appeared from the ambulance and took the front end of the stretcher. Together, he and Emily maneuvered it around the corner.

Karen hurried after them.

But this time, she was no longer in control of the route.

The side entrance opened.

The stretcher disappeared through it.

Karen stopped.

Her mouth remained open.

Several residents stood silently near the windows and walkway, watching.

For once, nobody seemed impressed by her authority.

Karen turned toward them.

“You better not think this is over.”

No one answered.

Behind her, the side door swung shut.

And somewhere inside the building, an emergency was already unfolding.
