Chapter 5: Karen’s Side of the Story
Karen didn’t deny setting the fire.
She admitted it immediately.
She said she had seen Elaine keeping the photograph in the mailbox years earlier.
She had noticed the brass key before Daniel ever knew it existed.
She had been afraid that Elaine would uncover the documents.
But Karen’s explanation changed the story in an unexpected way.
She hadn’t taken the trust money for herself.
Not originally.
Her husband had been dying.
There had been medical bills.
Their daughter Lily had needed tuition.
Karen had believed Margaret would never forgive her if she asked for help.
So she took money from the trust.
She told herself she would replace it.
She never did.
Years passed.
The debt grew.
Then Margaret discovered the withdrawals.
The family fractured.
Margaret stopped speaking to Karen.
Lily never learned why.
Karen had spent decades protecting a lie because she believed telling the truth would destroy her family.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
When Karen finished, she looked at him.
“I saw that key in the mailbox years ago,” she said. “Your wife must have found it too.”
“She did.”
Karen’s face tightened.
“Did she tell you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted me to hear it from you.”
Karen looked down.
That sentence seemed to hurt more than an accusation would have.
Daniel showed her Elaine’s note.
Karen read it twice.
Then she sat down.
“She knew,” Karen whispered.
“She knew enough to give you a chance.”
Karen began to cry.
But Daniel didn’t forgive her.
Not yet.
He told her the fire was still a serious matter.
The damaged mailbox had to be reported. The insurance company needed the truth. The family documents needed to be preserved.
And Lily deserved to know what happened.
Karen nodded.
“I’ll tell her.”
The next morning, she did.
Lily came to Daniel’s house with Karen.
The conversation lasted nearly three hours.
There were tears.
There was anger.
There were questions Karen couldn’t answer.
But there was no shouting.
For the first time in decades, mother and daughter were speaking about the same history instead of two different versions of it.
Then Lily asked about Margaret.
Karen couldn’t answer.
Margaret had died six years earlier.
But Daniel remembered the old letter.
There had been one final line Elaine had never mentioned.
He searched the box again.
He found it tucked beneath the trust papers.
If Lily ever asks, tell her I never stopped loving her.
Lily read the sentence.
She covered her mouth.
Karen reached for her daughter.
This time, Lily let her.
But one problem remained.
The trust money was gone.
And Lily wanted to know whether the family could make it right.
Karen looked at Daniel.
“I don’t have enough.”
Daniel glanced at the burned mailbox outside.
Then he looked at the documents.
“You don’t have to fix twenty years in one day.”
But there was still one question nobody had answered.
Where had the missing money actually gone?
