CHAPTER 1: THE ROADBLOCK AT AISLE FOUR

The fluorescent tubes overhead buzzed with the high, thin vibration of cheap transformers running past their service life. Aisle 4 smelled of floor wax, damp wool from the rain outside, and the dry, cardboard dust of overstocked housewares.

Marcus Holloway didn’t move his fingers from the faded blue handle of his shopping cart. He kept his grip steady, feeling the subtle friction of cracked plastic against his palm. Inside the wire basket sat the final clearance unit—an eight-quart stainless steel pressure cooker, its factory seals crisp and unbroken beneath the harsh overhead light. At 6:14 PM, his phone had vibrated once in his pocket, confirming the digital barcode scan on the store’s budget app. The transaction was logged to the server, a silent digital entry resting on a remote hard drive three states away.

“You took that right out of my personal selection zone, and you’re handing it over before security gets involved,” Brenda Lawson said. She stepped around the nose of her cart, her heavy soles slapping flat against the polished concrete floor.

Her silver visor sat low on her brow, catching the glare of the strip lights and throwing her eyes into shadow. She wore an oversized floral cardigan, the heavy knit hanging loose around her elbows as she raised a manicured forefinger and jabbed it toward the center of Marcus’s chest. She didn’t look at his face; she looked at the printed label on the box inside his basket.

“The item was sitting on an open clearance shelf,” Marcus said. His voice stayed low, flat, and level, echoing quietly against the stacked boxes of toaster ovens and slow cookers behind him. “There was no cart in the row. There was no tag on the display.”

“I was two steps away in paper goods,” Brenda snapped, her voice swelling to fill the empty volume of the aisle. A mother pushing a double stroller at the end of the row pulled her cart to a halt, her eyes darting between Brenda’s raised arm and Marcus’s dark canvas jacket. “I marked that endcap. Everyone in this department saw me standing here five minutes ago. You waited until my back was turned, and you reached into my space.”

Marcus felt the familiar, dull pulse behind his temples—the old, worn instinct to disengage, to yield the narrow corridor, to avoid the friction of a scene made in public over thirty dollars of stamped metal. He looked at Brenda’s knuckles, white where she gripped her heavy tote bag. He looked at the sideways cart blocking the concrete vein that led to the front registers.

He didn’t back up. He shifted his weight to his rear foot, settling his heels into the floor like iron stakes.

“If you believe store policy has been broken, call the floor manager,” Marcus said quietly. He pulled his phone from his coat pocket with his left hand, illuminated the active digital cart session, and rested the device flat on the top box. “I’m not moving the cart.”

Brenda’s chest expanded under the bright cardigan, her chin jerking upward as a pair of teenage store clerks stopped their stocking cart fifty feet away to watch. “Manager!” she shouted, turning her shoulder toward the main race-track aisle without dropping her finger. “Security! I need someone down in Aisle 4 right now! We have a theft in progress!”

Marcus watched the silver visor tilt back. In the gap between her cardigan and her sleeve, a thick plastic store lanyard dangled—not an employee badge, but a laminate pass bearing the bold, embossed crest of the local Merchants Association.
