Chapter 3: The Stickers
The HOA board meeting the following morning was supposed to be routine.
Instead, Evelyn arrived carrying a folder.
Inside were photographs of the damaged decorations, the maintenance-bucket label, and a copy of the access record.
Karen was already there.
She sat at the end of the conference table with her arms folded.
For once, she was not wearing sunglasses.
The board president, Margaret Ellis, asked Evelyn to explain what happened.
Evelyn kept her voice calm.
She described the bucket.
The water.
The argument.
The maintenance label.
Then Frank presented the access footage.
Karen finally spoke.
“I was addressing a safety concern.”
No one interrupted.
She continued.
“Those decorations were everywhere. People were walking through narrow spaces. Some materials were flammable. Someone had to take responsibility.”
Margaret looked toward Frank.
“Were the decorations inspected?”
“Yes.”
“Were any open flames found?”
“No.”
“Were the LED lights approved?”
“Yes.”
Karen’s face tightened.
“That doesn’t mean everything was safe.”
Evelyn said nothing.
Frank placed another sheet on the table.
It contained photographs from several homes.
Small orange stickers had been placed on decorations throughout the community.
Each sticker carried the same words:
SAFETY REVIEW REQUIRED.
The board had never authorized them.
Karen stared at the photographs.
Margaret asked quietly, “Did you place these?”
Karen hesitated.
“I was trying to help.”
That answer created a silence deeper than an argument would have.
Evelyn noticed something else.
One of the photographs showed the display of George and Linda Miller, an elderly couple who lived two streets away.
Their decorations had been removed entirely.
George was seventy-four.
His wife had recently undergone surgery, and Evelyn knew the Halloween display was one of the few community activities they had looked forward to.
Margaret turned toward Karen.
“You entered a restricted maintenance area, used HOA equipment without authorization, and interfered with residents’ displays.”
Karen’s shoulders stiffened.
“I thought I had the authority.”
“You didn’t.”
Karen pushed her chair backward.
“If the board had done its job, I wouldn’t have needed to.”
She stood and walked out.
Evelyn expected the board to stop her.
It didn’t.
Instead, Margaret asked Frank to change the maintenance-room lock immediately.
Then she looked at Evelyn.
“There is something else we need to determine.”
“What?”
“Who gave Karen that key?”
Evelyn’s stomach tightened.
Because the footage had proved Karen used a key.
It had not shown where she got it.
And until they knew that, the bucket was only the beginning.
