Chapter 2: The Tuesday Pattern
By the next morning, the HOA board had received three complaints.
One came from Margaret.
Another came from a resident who had noticed the clubhouse lights flickering.
The third was anonymous.
Daniel spent most of the morning reviewing the clubhouse’s utility records.
The numbers told a consistent story.
Electricity usage had been relatively stable for months. Then, six weeks earlier, it had begun climbing sharply.
The increases weren’t random.
They appeared on the same days every week.
Tuesday.
Thursday.
Saturday.
Daniel checked the clubhouse reservation calendar.
Those were the days Karen frequently booked the common room.
Sometimes for craft meetings.
Sometimes for what she called “private resident projects.”
None of the reservations explained the electricity.
Margaret arrived with a folder of her own.
Inside were copies of her recent utility bills.
Her home electricity usage had gone up slightly, but not enough to explain the complaints she’d made.
“I started writing down when the clubhouse felt unusually cold,” she said.
Daniel looked at her notes.
Almost every incident happened while Karen was there.
Then Margaret added something else.
“Last month, I saw her bringing boxes through the side door.”
“What kind of boxes?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel didn’t immediately accuse Karen of anything.
He knew how quickly a neighborhood dispute could turn into a personal feud.
Instead, he asked the board for permission to inspect the clubhouse electrical system.
That afternoon, Daniel returned with an electrician.
They traced the visible extension cord.
It led to a power strip inside the clubhouse.
That strip powered the heater, phone chargers, and small appliances Karen had openly connected.
But it wasn’t responsible for the biggest increase.
The electrician followed another cable.
It disappeared behind a storage cabinet.
The cabinet had been moved recently.
Behind it was a small opening drilled through the wall.
The second cable passed through it.
Daniel remembered Karen’s expression the night before.
The cable wasn’t simply supplying a heater.
It was feeding something else.
The electrician followed it into the utility room.
There, behind a stack of folding tables, they found another power strip.
It supplied several devices.
A mini refrigerator.
A small freezer.
A countertop cooking machine.
And an additional heating unit.
Daniel photographed everything.
Then he found something even stranger.
The devices were plugged into a circuit intended to power the clubhouse’s kitchen.
The circuit had been drawing heavily for weeks.
Daniel called Karen.
She answered on the fourth ring.
“We need to talk about the equipment in the utility room.”
There was silence.
Then Karen said, “Those are community facilities.”
“They’re your personal appliances.”
“I have permission.”
“From whom?”
Another pause.
Karen finally replied, “The HOA exists for residents. That’s the whole point.”
Then she hung up.
Daniel looked at the electrician.
The problem was no longer an argument about one outdoor outlet.
Someone had deliberately routed a second connection through the building.
And whoever installed it had gone to considerable effort to hide it.
