CHAPTER 1: THE GEOMETRY OF AISLE FOUR

“Keep your hands where the whole room can see them, Marcus!” Brenda’s voice sliced through the hum of the refrigeration units, hard and flat as an iron bar. “Nobody moves out of this aisle until security opens that bag!”

Marcus Holloway did not jump. He did not pull his shoulders back or reach for the canvas tote resting inside the child-seat well of his cart. Instead, he locked his wrists, spreading his fingers wide at chest height, palms facing outward into the harsh glare of the fluorescent tubes. The cold air from the open dairy display behind him pressed against the back of his neck, carrying the faint smell of spilled milk and floor wax.

“Step back from the cart, Brenda,” Marcus said. His voice remained low, dropping into the steady register he used when a classroom of thirty eighth-graders began to turn restless before a long weekend.

“Don’t you order me around!” Brenda’s floral-pattern tunic shook as she rammed her steel shopping cart forward, jamming its front plastic bumper horizontally against the front wheels of his own. The metal squealed on the polished concrete. She turned her torso toward a family standing five feet away by the canned soup, her oversized sunglasses sliding down the bridge of her nose. “He put a two-hundred-dollar espresso machine straight into his personal bag! I watched him take it right off the promotional endcap!”

Three separate shoppers paused. A woman in a yellow raincoat instinctively pulled her young daughter by the wrist, stepping behind a display of paper towels. To Marcus’s right, a teenager in a varsity jacket raised a phone, the glass screen reflecting the overhead grid of lights.

Marcus didn’t look at the phone. He didn’t look at Brenda’s trembling, manicured index finger, which was pointing directly at his throat. He shifted his weight six inches to the left, planting the heavy rubber sole of his sneaker against the rear wheel axle of his cart. The movement anchored his cart into a fixed triangle between his boot, the cart frame, and the shelf display.

He looked up.

Directly above the intersection of Aisle 4 and the main perimeter aisle hung a dark acrylic dome, pristine and free of dust. He knew the layout of Oakridge Market; he’d lived within four miles of the store for six years. That specific lens covered a three-hundred-and-sixty-degree cone across the high-value small appliance displays and the central checkout path.

“I am not touching the bag,” Marcus said, his tone entirely void of panic, calculating the distance between Brenda’s phone camera and the dome above. “And I am not moving my feet until store management pulls the optic log from that dome above your shoulder.”

Brenda let out a short, sharp laugh that sounded like dry paper tearing. She reached into her leather handbag, her fingers clutching a crumpled piece of white register paper—a receipt with a torn header. “We don’t need a manager to tell us what my own eyes just saw, Marcus. You think because you sit on the district committee you can take whatever you want?”

Marcus felt a familiar, cold weight settle behind his ribs—the same phantom tightness he’d felt five years ago when an inventory discrepancy at his first school had paused his credential renewal for three weeks before an audit cleared him. He swallowed it down, turning the memory into pure leverage. He did not speak. He let the silence stretch across the aisle while the black dome above them recorded every inch of her frame.
