Chapter 3: The Lobby Camera
Evelyn Carter had been sitting in the lobby when everything happened.
At seventy-one, Evelyn was small, silver-haired, and nearly invisible when she wanted to be.
She had watched Marcus approach the elevator.
She had watched Karen move into the doorway.
She had heard every word.
But Evelyn hadn’t intervened.
She knew Marcus was perfectly capable of standing his ground.
What disturbed her was what happened afterward.
Karen’s version of events was already traveling through the building.
By lunchtime, several residents had received a message suggesting that Marcus had been “aggressive” and had “forced his way into an elevator.”
Evelyn knew that was not what happened.
She went to the concierge desk.
“Do we have lobby camera footage from this morning?”
The concierge, a young man named Tyler, looked uncomfortable.
“We do.”
“Can it be preserved?”
He hesitated.
“Why?”
“Because there was a dispute.”
Tyler glanced toward the hallway.
Then he quietly told her that Karen had already asked management to review the footage.
That changed everything.
Evelyn wasn’t interested in taking sides.
She simply wanted the facts preserved.
She asked Marcus whether he would be willing to give a statement.
He agreed.
That afternoon, the property manager, Daniel Brooks, reviewed the footage.
The video showed exactly what Evelyn had described.
Karen blocked the elevator.
Marcus stopped.
Karen attempted to close the doors.
Marcus reopened them.
He entered only after maneuvering around her.
There was no physical contact.
No aggressive movement.
No threat.
Daniel watched the footage twice.
Then he looked at the complaint Karen had submitted.
The difference between the written accusation and the video was impossible to ignore.
But there was something else.
The camera angle showed Karen walking toward the second elevator immediately after Marcus entered the first.
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
He watched the next camera.
Karen wasn’t simply leaving.
She was waiting.
She stood beside the second elevator for almost three minutes.
Then another resident approached.
An elderly woman using a walker.
Karen stepped toward the elevator door.
Daniel stopped the video.
His expression hardened.
The same pattern was beginning again.
