Chapter 1: The Line Nobody Authorized
“Back up! I said nobody gets through unless I approve their costume!”
Karen’s voice cut across the Halloween decorations just as the first children reached the entrance to the community candy area.
She stood beside an orange plastic barrier stretched across the walkway, one hand gripping the rope as if she were guarding the entrance to a private club instead of a neighborhood celebration.
The woman facing her did not argue.
At seventy-two, Evelyn Harper had learned that shouting rarely made people listen. She simply reached down, wrapped one hand around the nearest plastic post, and pulled.
The post came loose with a sharp pop.
The rope snapped from Karen’s grip.
A group of children in costumes immediately began moving through the opening.
Karen lunged for the barrier.
“This is an HOA event!” she snapped. “I decide who gets through this entrance!”
Evelyn held the plastic post at her side.
“No,” she said quietly. “You don’t.”
Parents who had been watching from behind the candy tables began taking out their phones.
Karen noticed.
Her posture changed.
She was no longer simply angry. She was suddenly aware that other people were watching what she was doing.
Evelyn looked down and noticed a small homemade sign attached to the remaining section of rope.
She picked it up.
The sign contained several handwritten restrictions that had never appeared on the official Halloween announcement.
One line said that only “approved” children could enter the candy area.
Another restriction caught Evelyn’s attention.
She looked toward Karen.
“Then explain why your sign says only children approved by you can get candy.”
Karen froze.
Her jaw tightened.
“Because I make the rules around here!”
The words were loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.
But before Evelyn could respond, a little girl standing beside the candy table pointed at the bottom of the sign.
There was another handwritten rule.
NO COSTUMES AFTER 8 PM.
Evelyn checked her watch.
7:18.
She looked at the children.
Then at Karen.
The barrier had come down, but the sign revealed that the barrier had never been the whole problem.
Someone had been planning to control the evening.
And there was still more than forty minutes before Karen’s first unofficial deadline.
