Chapter 1: You Can’t Come Through Here

The ambulance was already braking when Karen stepped into the middle of the entrance lane.

Its tires squealed against the pavement.

Karen threw up her left hand as though she were stopping a speeding teenager, her bright pink blouse pulling tightly across her broad shoulders. Her oversized sunglasses sat pushed onto her messy blonde hair, and her right hand gripped her smartphone.

“HEY! Back up!” she shouted. “You can’t come through here! This is private property!”

The white-and-red ambulance stopped several feet from her.

For one brief second, everything around the community entrance seemed to freeze.

The landscaped lawns were quiet. The clubhouse windows reflected the late-afternoon sun. A sprinkler clicked somewhere beyond the hedges.

Then the driver’s door opened.

A Black EMT in his late thirties stepped down from the cab.

His name was Marcus Reed.

He had the controlled expression of someone who had learned that panic never helped a patient. But the tightness in his jaw showed that his patience was being tested.

“Ma’am,” he said firmly, “we’re responding to an emergency. Move out of the lane.”

Karen pointed toward the community sign behind her.

“I live here.”

Marcus looked past her toward the clubhouse.

“I understand. We need to get through.”

“You need to follow the rules like everybody else.”

Karen’s voice grew louder.

Behind the ambulance, the rear doors suddenly opened.

Sofia Alvarez, the second EMT, climbed down and pulled the folded stretcher toward the pavement.

The metal frame snapped open.

CLACK.

Karen’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

Her mouth stopped moving.

Her eyes flicked toward the stretcher.

Then she looked back at Marcus.

The confidence returned almost immediately.

“Don’t you dare order me around,” she said.

Marcus stepped closer, careful to maintain distance.

“Someone needs medical help.”

That sentence landed differently.

Not because Karen suddenly agreed with him.

Because now she could see the stretcher.

She could see the medical equipment.

She could see the urgency she had been treating as an argument about parking.

Still, she raised her phone.

“I live here,” she insisted. “I have every right to question what you’re doing.”

Marcus pointed toward the open ambulance.

“Not when you’re blocking an emergency vehicle.”

Karen stepped forward.

Marcus did not move backward.

For a moment, neither yielded.

Then Sofia pulled the stretcher completely onto the pavement.

Its wheels struck the ground.

Karen turned her head.

The ambulance began moving.

The emergency crew was going around her.

She had lost control of the situation.

And then she noticed something else.

Across the entrance, an older man stood beside a parked sedan.

He was holding up his own phone.

He had been recording.

Karen’s face went still.

The ambulance disappeared farther down the road.

The man lowered his phone.

Karen stared at him.

For the first time that afternoon, she seemed to understand that the confrontation might not end when the ambulance disappeared.

It might only be beginning.
