CHAPTER 1: AISLE SEVEN STANDOFF

The cold metal frame of a shopping cart slammed against the linoleum with a sound like a dropping iron gate, wedging firmly between the flour display and the sugar shelves.

“You took that directly out of my basket while my back was turned!”

The voice was loud, practiced, and carried across the open steel rafters of Aisle Seven with the sharp authority of a gavel hitting wood. Clara Bennett did not flinch, though her thumb tightened against the smooth paper bag tucked beneath her arm. She stood under the humming fluorescent tubes of Oakridge Market, framed by three-pound bags of unbleached flour, staring at the woman standing three feet away.

Brenda Halloway had her hands planted on her hips. Her floral blouse, patterned in aggressive crimson and navy, practically vibrated against the neutral backdrop of the grocery shelves. Oversized tortoiseshell sunglasses sat propped high on her styled hair, catching the glare of the overhead lights. She pointed a French-manicured index finger directly at Clara’s face.

“Drop the bag right now,” Brenda demanded, stepping forward until her chest nearly brushed the front of Clara’s plain grey hoodie. “Drop it on the shelf, or I am calling the police on you for retail theft.”

At the end of the aisle, two shopping carts ground to a halt. A mother holding a toddler pulled her phone from her pocket, the screen lighting up instantly. A stock clerk with a box cutter paused mid-slice, his eyes darting between Brenda’s rigid posture and Clara’s silence.

Clara did not raise her voice. She felt the familiar weight of a dozen public situations where she had stepped backward, smoothed things over, or ceded ground just to keep the water still. But her posture remained straight, her heels planted on the scuffed tiles. Beneath her arm, the heavy, distinct contour of the cast-aluminum Nordic bakeware tin rested securely inside its paper wrapping.

“I am not opening my bag for you,” Clara said. Her voice was quiet, stripped of emotion, dropping below the ambient hum of the store’s air handlers. “We can wait right here for management.”

Brenda let out a short, mocking laugh, turning her head toward the gathered onlookers at the end of the aisle as if inviting them to share in the absurdity. “Management? You think because you kept your mouth shut at the endcap nobody saw you reach into my cart? I’ve been tracking this clearance item since eight this morning. You didn’t buy it. You took it.”

She stepped closer, invading the narrow space between Clara and the shelf, her hand reaching out toward the lip of Clara’s tote bag.

Clara took one deliberate half-step back, keeping her hands visible, fingers resting flat against her phone screen in her pocket. “Touch my bag,” Clara said softly, “and this stops being an argument about baking tins.”

At the end of the row, a young man in a red apron and earpiece rounded the corner, his eyes widening as he registered the blocked aisle, the raised phones, and Brenda’s outstretched hand.
