CHAPTER 1: CLEAR THE LINE

“Hands off the wire frame,” Elena said, her voice dropping into the flat, measured tone she used for non-compliant job sites.

Brenda Hollings didn’t move her knuckles. Her manicured fingers dug deeper into the grey plastic coating of the shopping cart handle, her knuckles turning chalky under the fluorescent glare of Aisle 14. Her phone was already vertical, the red recording light glinting in the lens like a tiny, watchful eye.

“You think you can just snatch a three-hundred-dollar machine right out from under someone’s nose because you walk quiet?” Brenda’s voice boomed off the metal shelving, calibrated to reach the main race track of the department store. “Look at her! Look at this woman!”

Elena didn’t blink. Years of reviewing structural blueprints on windy, chaotic construction sites had stripped the noise from her peripheral vision. She didn’t look at the fifteen or twenty shoppers who had halted their carts at the mouth of the aisle, their faces illuminated by the pale blue glow of their own raising screens. She didn’t look at the neon-orange track jacket Brenda wore like armor. She kept her eyes locked on the space between Brenda’s eyebrows.

Inside Elena’s cart sat the square cardboard box—matte black with silver lettering, depicting a sleek stainless-steel espresso unit. A clearance sticker, neon green and stamped with a 60% markdown, clung to the top corner.

“I am giving you one warning to remove your hands from my property,” Elena said. She did not raise her voice. She did not lean forward. She kept her palms resting flat and cold against her side of the metal handle, her posture as rigid as a load-bearing column.

“Your property?” Brenda laughed—a sharp, barking sound designed to draw the two store associates lingering near the bedding display. “I had my hand on that box in the clearance bay five minutes ago! I turned around to grab a basket, and this thief scooped it into her cart and bolted!”

“You’re lying,” Elena said quietly.

“I have it on camera!” Brenda brandished her phone, thrusting the screen within six inches of Elena’s rimless glasses. “I have video of the empty shelf where I laid my purse down! Everyone see this? She took it right out of my personal boundary!”

Elena felt the cold prickle of an old memory trying to claw its way up her throat—the sharp, humiliating sting of a site manager blaming her for a missing transit level six years ago, the way the whole crew had stood in a circle and watched her clear her locker because she hadn’t documented the transfer log. She swallowed the bitterness down, letting it harden into something dense and immovable.

She didn’t reach for her purse. She didn’t try to pull the cart backward.

Instead, Elena tilted her head up just three inches. Her gaze passed over Brenda’s styled bob, past the dangling price signs hanging from the steel trusses, and settled on the dark, polished acrylic dome mounted directly to the ceiling beam twenty feet above them.

“You see that black bubble, Brenda?” Elena asked, her voice dropping another octave into absolute stillness. “That’s a 4K wide-angle dome camera tied directly to the loss prevention office at the front of the store. And if you don’t take your hands off my cart in five seconds, the man monitoring that feed is going to be the least of your problems.”

Brenda’s posture stiffened for a fraction of a second, her grip micro-flinching against the wire frame, before her face hardened back into a sneer. “Call him! Call security! Let’s see who walks out of here in cuffs!”
